"Built Dam Strong!"

A car I recently tuned

Every once in a while, I'll be able to feature some of the cars I work on! I like doing it.

The first car up is Anthony's civic. He's the guy who started The Honda Game group on FaceBook. He wanted to put together a team build utilizing resources found in THG members and no machine work needed. The car went from shell to running down the track in 18 days. I tuned the car over 4 consecutive late, annoying nights battling ignorance (my own), electrical issues, weather and time to get it done. Enough waxing eloquent about stuff, here's the car:

The guy doing the custom hood work did a really good job. That's certainly something you won't ever see me doing. LOL!

  1. Saw the car at honda day horrible job on building and tuning car! It died out on second gear, either he missed shift or the tune was horrible (sorry no offense). The car looks clean on qp but looks retarted with all the sticker and that hood the airbush looks great but looks too much. The way everyone hyped this car up i really taught it was going to do at least low 12's but i believe Anthony's TGH fans were disappointed. all together it was a team effort i give a thumbs up but next time get guys who knows how to build a car correct put it together so you don't get embarrass at a big event like Honda Day!

  2. No offense taken at all.

The bog issue is that he's running an LX transmission with a stock head/cam/springs. His rev limit is currently only 7,400RPM. When he shifts, especially 1-2, the engine falls on it's face. Saturday, the one pass he made was in the 16.6. I honestly messed up something with the rev limit so he could only rev to 5,500RPM. That was my fault, and I corrected it on Saturday night. The next day, the car went 15@~100MPH with a really bad 60'. I mainly wanted to make sure the engine wouldn't run lean and blow the heck up. That's more embarrassing at the track than being slow. LOL!

The tune IS rough. It will get better. The car has some very un-optimal parts. It will get better. It's not too far off from running 12s. It just needs to rev out and up the boost. The fastest way to do that is to get some decent valve springs in and then put in an EX/Si transmission. All easy and not too expensive, and then he'll be in the 12s if he can drive it off the line.

Thanks for the feedback. We'll keep getting better. =)

  3. Matt your Tuning skills need to get better but you are trying and that counts alot. But the setup on that hatch is all wrong first of all. he would do way better with this set up if you guys dont mind me saying. zc block with d16 vtec head change that retarted top mount and turbo and waste gate. get an log style or ram horn manifoild a t3/t4 turbo nice little 57 - 60 trim turbo a tial waste gate and change that ridiculous intercooler and put a smaller one (not skinny but smaller that what is one there now and fyi spray paint on an intercooler incase you dont know but it slows down the air flow, 740cc injectors a headpackage and a good tune to 10-12 lbs of boost and that car will do low 12's all day on some slicks not those bs swirlies he had on honda day.

    1. The turbo that is on there equates to a 57-trim, or so. THe boost threshold is actually around 4k. It has a Y8 VTEC head on it. The injectors are cleaned, balanced and flow tested at 810cc. The manifold is what it is. The wastegate works perfect and was running 10lbs, but at 11:1AFR, which, again, was safe, along with a very conservative timing map. Suprisingly, when driven on the street, it is really not terrible for a thrown together car with a SWAG of a tune and a few late night pulls on the highway. Heck, I'd rather he get an Ostrich of his own so I can tune it on Crome Pro with a gold bin at the very least. You see, I might not be so great with Crome, but I know how to actually tune. I just don't care for tuning OBD1. I prefer OBD0, since I prefer EF and earlier cars. Borrowing slicks fell through. It will hit the track with slicks sometime soon, I imagine. Anthony got rained out of a test and tune this Wednesday. He's going to the track to practice more.

Again, I do need to get better and will. The car will get better. I actually completely agree with your assessment of the parts on the car, but, it was put together with donated parts, leftovers and borrowed things. The fact that it has been running since then with no issues starting, running or driving is, quite frankly, a miracle. I'll accept a miracle once in a while. =) By the end of the season, I think the car will be moving decently at the track and be running well all around.

I actually like the hood. Mikey did a great job on it. I am not one for stickers, so, eh? It's not my car, and it really isn't terrible looking at all. I think that once you see my CRX (which I am getting out of hibernation tomorrow, actually), you'll see why the looks aren't too much of a concern of mine . . . LOL!

Thanks again for posting up. I love feedback, especially when it is constructive like yours.

    1. How was it horrible? It hasn't blown up. It's pretty fast (not quick, yet) and it was done on a low budget.

If people are disappointed, I can't help it. My job was to keep it from blowing the _)(#$(* up. I did. It also ran a MPH fast enough to hit 12s, but didn't have the tire or driver to do it.

All the car needs to run solid 12s is a bit more boost, slicks and more seat time at the track for Anthony.

As far as I know, the first track runs were pretty embarrassing, but you know what? Coach's goal was to just drive the darn thing to Honda Day and back. He did that.

What would you have done differently given the time, budget and resource limitations?

Sure some people are seriously pissed off the car didn't run 12s, but . . . why? It's not their car. It's been running well since. It is perfectly capable of 12s. What's so embarrassing about that? It seems to me you are the only one embarrassed, cuz Coach isn't.
